Wildfire smoke is fine particulate — mostly PM 2.5, roughly 2.5 microns and smaller. That's small enough to pass through most standard 1-inch HVAC filters as if they weren't there. When an AQI event pushes outdoor PM 2.5 into the 150-300 range for days at a time (which South Bay homes see multiple times per year now), the difference between a house that stays clean and one that fills with haze is the filter — and how the whole system was set up around it.
What actually filters PM 2.5
MERV ratings quantify filtration effectiveness. Higher MERV = tighter filter = more captured. But higher MERV also means more resistance to airflow, which fights the blower. Here's the practical breakdown:
- MERV 6-8 (the standard 1-inch pleated). Catches larger dust, pet hair, pollen. Barely touches PM 2.5. Fine for baseline indoor air, useless for smoke.
- MERV 11-13. Now you're capturing meaningful PM 2.5. MERV 13 in particular is the sweet spot for wildfire — it catches enough smoke particulate to noticeably improve indoor air without choking most residential blowers.
- MERV 14-16. Hospital-grade filtration. Very effective. But most residential air handlers can't move design airflow through them without static pressure spiking, which hurts efficiency and can shorten equipment life. Only appropriate with a matching filter cabinet and confirmed blower capacity.
- HEPA. True HEPA (99.97% of 0.3-micron particles) requires a dedicated bypass HEPA unit — a standalone air handler that pulls a slipstream of house air through a HEPA cartridge. Retrofit into a residential system is real work but does actually deliver hospital-clean air.
Where your existing system probably sits
Most South Bay homes we open up have a MERV 6-8 filter in a 1-inch slot near the return grille. That's what the original design assumed. It's the reason a smoke event still fills the house even with the system running — the smoke is passing through the filter, and it's landing on furniture, walls, HVAC equipment itself, and every surface downstream of the return.
Two upgrade paths that actually work
Path 1 — Upgrade the filter slot to a 4-inch media cabinet
Replace the 1-inch slot with a 4-inch or 5-inch media filter cabinet, MERV 13 rated. Same airflow area but with 4-5× the actual filtering surface, so static pressure stays reasonable even with tight filtration. This is our most common recommendation for whole-house smoke protection. It's a real project (cabinet installed in the return plenum) but not a huge one, and the filter changes come to about once a year instead of every 90 days.
Cost is meaningful but predictable. And the filter you install once a year at, say, $70-90 is cheaper per year than $12 filters every quarter.
Path 2 — Standalone HEPA units for one or two rooms
A well-sized portable HEPA (rated for the room's square footage) in the master bedroom and the main living area gives you clean-air refuges when the whole-house filtration isn't enough. Common recommendation: combine with a MERV 13 whole-house filter for baseline, and let the portables handle the last 20% in the rooms where you spend the most time.
Cheaper than a whole-house HEPA retrofit, more effective than upgrading MERV alone.
System-side moves that matter during a smoke event
- Set the thermostat FAN to ON, not AUTO. Continuous fan means the filter is constantly cleaning the air even when cooling isn't calling. Coming out of a smoke event, this is the single most useful setting.
- Close the outside-air damper if you have one. Some newer California-code installations bring outside air into the return for ventilation. During a smoke event, close it (or verify it defaults closed at high outdoor PM).
- Change the filter after the event. A filter that captured smoke for four days is loaded and won't perform well going forward.
Failure modes to watch for
- Dropping MERV 13 into a 1-inch slot without checking static pressure. The blower struggles, cooling capacity drops, and the coil can freeze. Confirm the equipment handles the pressure drop before making the swap.
- Ionizing / ozone-generating "air purifiers." Many devices marketed as air cleaners produce ozone as a byproduct. Ozone is a respiratory irritant, and California ARB specifically warns against using them indoors. Stick with mechanical filtration.
- UV lights sold as smoke solutions. UV kills biological particulate. It doesn't do anything to smoke particulate. Different tool, different job.
