If you own a home west of the 405 that was built before roughly 1990, there's a real chance it was designed to be cooled by a Pacific breeze and a couple of casement windows — not a central air conditioner. That wasn't cheapness. It was climate math. For most of the 20th century, the coastal cities of the South Bay had summer highs that averaged 75-80°F and nights in the 60s, and the marine layer did the rest of the work. Central AC was a Palm Springs product, not a Manhattan Beach one.

That math is changing. And the retrofits it forces — retrofits that never existed as a line item in the original blueprint — are the single most common project on our schedule.

What "built without AC" actually means

A home built without air conditioning has three specific fingerprints. First, no exterior condenser pad — most 1950s-1970s Torrance, Redondo, and Hermosa builds have no concrete pad poured near an electrical service. Second, no return air ducting sized for cooling — heating loads move a fraction of the CFM that cooling loads do, so a gravity furnace's ductwork (if any ducting existed at all) is almost never adequate for a modern AC. Third, the electrical service is often 100 amps or less, without a spare double-pole 40A breaker to feed a compressor.

These aren't defects. They're just what a home optimized for coastal LA looked like in 1962. The reason it matters now is that every one of those three items has to be added to the scope of a retrofit — and none of them are visible on a photo of the panel.

Why the climate math has shifted

Two things changed. One, LA's summer heat waves are more frequent and last longer. September and October events that used to be one-day spikes now stretch into week-long stretches where coastal cities see 90°F+ afternoons. Two, coastal humidity often stays high while the temperature climbs, which is when a shaded, cross-ventilated house stops being comfortable — still air at 82°F and 70% humidity feels roughly like still air at 88°F and 40%.

You feel it as: the house that used to cool down at 6pm doesn't cool down until midnight, upstairs bedrooms stay uncomfortable overnight, and the window unit that was a "backup" is now running most weekends between June and October. That's when homeowners start pricing out permanent solutions.

The three retrofit paths — and their tradeoffs

There isn't one right answer. There are three, and the right one depends on the house.

  • Adding central AC to an existing duct system. Works when there's already forced-air heating with adequately sized ducts. In the South Bay this is the exception, not the rule — most existing systems were designed for the smaller CFM of heat-only. Duct modification cost is real and often the largest line item.
  • Ductless mini-splits. Solves the "no ducts" problem directly. One outdoor unit and one to five indoor heads, room by room. Higher per-zone cost than central, no ductwork disruption. The dominant answer for pre-1970 beach-city homes without existing forced-air.
  • Ducted heat pump with new supply/return. Best long-term efficiency and single thermostat, but the most invasive install. Requires attic or crawl-space access and a real look at the electrical panel.

Failure modes we see on this retrofit

The mistakes we get called to correct on retrofits done elsewhere usually fall into three buckets:

  • Oversized central systems. A contractor picks a 4-ton system for a 1400 sq ft house because the calculator says so. Result: the AC short-cycles, never dehumidifies, and the homeowner is uncomfortable. Manual J is the right sizing tool. It takes 30-45 minutes and it's not optional.
  • Missing electrical work. A 100-amp panel with no room for a compressor circuit is a very common find. The install goes in, the panel trips, and the fix is a service upgrade that should have been priced from the start.
  • Uninsulated ducts in a hot attic. New ducts run through a South Bay attic that hits 130°F in September. If the R-value is wrong, half your capacity is heating the attic. Insulation and Title 24 duct-testing (HERS) exist to catch this.

The conversation that follows is honest: sometimes the answer is a single ductless mini-split for the master bedroom rather than a whole-home system. Sometimes it's a full ducted heat pump.
