Coastal Los Angeles has a weird humidity profile. The marine layer keeps morning humidity in the 75-90% range along the coast almost year-round. But the temperature is mild enough that standard AC almost never runs long enough to dehumidify. The result: a house that's cool but feels clammy, closets that smell musty, and bathrooms that stay damp for hours after a shower.
Why standard AC doesn't fix this
An air conditioner dehumidifies as a side effect of cooling. Warm humid air passes over a cold evaporator coil, water condenses on the coil, and the drier air continues on to the house. Great — except this only happens when the AC is running. In a mild coastal climate, the thermostat is calling for cooling maybe two hours a day in June and a lot less in April or November. Two hours of dehumidification a day doesn't overcome 24 hours of humid outside air working its way into the house.
The technical term is "latent load" (moisture) vs. "sensible load" (temperature). Coastal Southern California has a very high ratio of latent to sensible — the humidity is out of proportion with the heat.
How to tell if your house has a humidity problem
Signs worth looking for:
- Interior humidity stays above 60% for extended periods, especially overnight.
- Musty smell in closets, especially closed-door closets against exterior walls.
- Condensation on cool metal surfaces (thermostats, refrigerator sides, plumbing).
- Damp feeling in the master bedroom in the early morning.
- Warping or cupping of hardwood floors.
- Mildew or mold on grout, window sills, or the corners of exterior walls.
A cheap indoor hygrometer settles the question. Anywhere in the 30-50% range is comfortable. Above 60% for extended periods, you have a problem worth solving.
Three solutions that actually work
1 — Whole-house dehumidifier
A dedicated dehumidifier ties into your existing ductwork or into a return plenum. It runs independently of the AC and delivers dry air to the house whenever humidity rises above the setpoint. This is our most common recommendation for homes with a real humidity problem. Units are quiet (they live in the attic or garage), efficient, and set-and-forget.
Cost is meaningful — real equipment plus install labor. But this is a system upgrade with a real quality-of-life delta.
2 — Variable-speed HVAC with a low-speed dehumidification mode
Modern inverter-driven heat pumps (including Daikin's variable-speed lineup) can run the blower at a very low speed while modestly cooling, extending runtime enough to pull real moisture out of the air even when full cooling isn't needed. This is called "enhanced dehumidification" or "reheat" mode. If you're replacing your HVAC anyway, choosing a variable-speed system means you address humidity as part of the replacement rather than adding a separate solution.
3 — Portable dehumidifier in problem rooms
A well-sized portable dehumidifier in a specific closet, basement, or bedroom is a real fix for a local problem. Cheap, effective, but noisy and requires manual draining or a small drain line. Best for a single problem room, not a house-wide solution.
What doesn't fix it
- Running the AC harder or colder. Colder setpoint doesn't help because the AC still isn't running longer per day. The house gets uncomfortably cold before the humidity drops.
- Cracking a window. Outside humidity is what's driving the problem. Ventilating with humid air doesn't help.
- Standalone dehumidifiers designed for basements. If it's rated for a 500sq basement, it won't touch a 1500sq main floor.
- UV lights or ozone generators. These target biological particulate, not moisture. Wrong tool.
The mold conversation
Mold grows above roughly 60% humidity. If your interior humidity has been high for a long time, a dehumidifier alone may not solve an existing mold problem — you may need remediation of the existing growth first, then humidity control to prevent it from returning. If you smell mildew consistently or see visible black spots on drywall or grout, an environmental testing service is the right first call, not our team.
