A furnace blowing cold air is almost always one of five things. In order of frequency, from what we see on real service calls in the South Bay:

  1. The thermostat is set to fan-on instead of auto.
  2. The furnace is short-cycling on a limit switch (usually a dirty filter or a closed vent).
  3. The ignitor or flame sensor is dirty or failed.
  4. The gas valve isn't opening (control board, thermostat wire, or valve itself).
  5. The condensate drain is blocked and a safety switch is disabling burners (high-efficiency units only).

Four of those five are homeowner-checkable. One requires a technician. This article walks the checklist in the same order our team does when they arrive on-site.

Step 1 — Thermostat set to fan-on

The most common cause of "the furnace is blowing cold air" isn't the furnace at all. It's the thermostat's fan setting. "Auto" runs the blower only when the burners are firing. "On" runs the blower continuously, and between heat cycles it's just moving room-temperature air past your face, which feels cold.

Fix: on the thermostat, set FAN to AUTO. If the problem stops, you're done.

Step 2 — Short-cycling on a limit switch

Every furnace has a high-limit switch that shuts off the burners if the heat exchanger gets too hot. It's a safety, and it does its job. The most common trigger is restricted airflow — a dirty filter, a closed damper, or a supply vent blocked by furniture — that causes heat to build up faster than the blower can move it away.

Symptom pattern: burners fire for 60-90 seconds, then shut off. The blower keeps running for a minute or two afterward, moving cool air. Then the cycle repeats.

Fix: check and replace the filter. Walk the house and verify every supply vent is open and unobstructed. If you have a heat-pump system or a variable-speed furnace, restart it at the thermostat after the fix. If the pattern persists with a fresh filter, the limit switch itself or the blower motor speed setting may be off — that's a technician call.

Step 3 — Dirty or failed ignitor or flame sensor

A modern gas furnace has either a hot-surface ignitor (most common on 90%+ efficiency units) or an intermittent-pilot with a flame sensor. When either fails, you'll hear the inducer motor start, but no burners light — the fan then kicks on the blower after a delay, moving cold air through the ducts until the system locks out.

Symptom pattern: click, whirr (inducer), silence, blower on but no heat.

Hot-surface ignitors are a wear part — 5-10 years is a typical life. Flame sensors get coated with residue and stop reading the flame; a light cleaning with fine emery cloth often restores them. Both are technician replacements; both are cheap parts.

Step 4 — Gas valve or control board

If the ignitor is glowing but no gas is flowing, either the gas valve isn't opening or the control board isn't calling for it. Homeowner check: is the gas turned on to the appliance? (Look for the shut-off valve near the furnace — the handle should be parallel to the pipe.) Beyond that, it's a technician call — testing a gas valve safely requires the right meter and the right access.

Step 5 — Condensate drain blocked (high-efficiency furnaces only)

A 90%+ efficiency (condensing) furnace produces liquid condensate as combustion byproduct. That condensate drains through a small trap and line. If the line clogs (algae, dust, sludge), a float safety switch opens and disables the burners to prevent damage. The blower still runs on call from the thermostat, so you get cold air.

Symptom pattern: everything looks like it wants to start, but burners never light. Check the area near the furnace for condensate spillage or a full trap.

Fix: clear the condensate line (a wet-vac at the outdoor termination often works). If the drain stays clogged, the internal trap needs service.
